Formaion Of sedimentary RocksSedimentary rocks are formed by the deposition and subsequent cementation of that material at the Earth's surface and within bodies of water. The sediment in side the rocks was formed by weathering and erosion from the source area, and then transported to the place of deposition by water, wind, ice, mass movement, or glaciers. As time passes, the layers of sediments accumulate in their chronological orders with the oldest at the bottom and the youngest on the top. While the layers get thicker and heavier, compaction occurs and the top layers put pressure onto the ones below, forcing the water particles to some out, and the layers squeezed together even more. The the process called compression takes place. Leftover mineral substances for glue like liquid linking the sediment layer together to finish the final steps of the formation of a sedimentary rock.
